How to Maintain Your Hardwood Floors: A Complete Guide

Hardwood floors are an investment that can last a lifetime—if you look after them properly. After 40 years in the flooring trade, here are our top tips for keeping your wooden floors in pristine condition.

Daily Care

The most important thing you can do for your hardwood floors is keep them clean. Dust and grit act like sandpaper underfoot, gradually wearing away the finish.

  • Sweep or vacuum daily in high-traffic areas
  • Use a soft-bristled brush attachment when vacuuming
  • Place doormats at entrances to catch dirt

Weekly Cleaning

Once a week, give your floors a more thorough clean:

  • Use a damp (not wet) microfibre mop
  • Use a pH-neutral wood floor cleaner
  • Never use steam mops—the moisture can damage the wood
  • Dry any spills immediately

Protect High-Traffic Areas

Prevention is better than cure. Protect your floors before damage occurs:

  • Use felt pads under furniture legs
  • Place rugs in high-traffic areas and under heavy furniture
  • Avoid walking on hardwood floors in high heels
  • Keep pet nails trimmed

Control Humidity

Wood is a natural material that expands and contracts with humidity changes. To prevent gaps, cupping, or warping:

  • Keep indoor humidity between 35-55%
  • Use a dehumidifier in summer and a humidifier in winter
  • Keep heating consistent during winter months

When to Refinish

Even well-maintained floors will eventually need refinishing. Signs it's time include:

  • Visible scratches and wear patterns
  • Faded or grey appearance
  • Water no longer beads on the surface

Most hardwood floors can be refinished 3-5 times over their lifetime, giving you decades of beautiful flooring.
